A nursing pillow is an essential item to have when you begin breastfeeding. There are many options to choose from, so here’s some information to help you find one that will work best for your situation.

Remember: It is important to choose a pillow that provides good support for your back and allows your baby to be raised up to the height of your breast area.

Some nursing pillows work more effectively than others. Here are a few pillow types commonly available on the market:

  • A pillow that wraps all the way around your waist and then clips closed will provide the most support without slipping out of position. We love the My Brest Friend nursing pillow.

  • Half-moon type pillows can provide some comfort, but have a tendency to slide away from you with the weight of your baby and your arms pushing down while holding them.

  • A pillow that resembles a chevron can also be used, but does not offer as much support as the other types because it is often incorrectly positioned and does not support your baby at the right height to reach your breasts.

Keep in mind that you do not have to purchase a brand new pillow. One of your friends or family members will be happy to lend you one they used to help nurse their baby. Another way to find one is at a resale store or on the internet.

Pillows have covers that can be taken off and washed. You can opt to buy a new cover to change the look and style to suit your mood. Just be sure to find a pillow that feels comfortable on you and you should be happy.

Now that you’ve picked out one, make sure it works for you.

Always keep in mind, breastfeeding should be a pleasurable experience. Don’t lean forward toward your baby because doing so can create serious back pain and muscle soreness. Instead, your baby should be positioned up high enough to reach your breasts easily and allow you to sit back and relax with your baby comfortably latched on. Think of yourself as the queen on her throne; the queen does not bow to anyone, the baby comes to the queen!

Look for a nursing pillow that is big enough for you to bring your arms around your baby while nursing and rest your arms on the nursing pillow. This will help prevent stiffening in your shoulders and neck. It’s also nice if your pillow hooks around your body or has a strap to secure to itself so it doesn’t keep slipping off during the feeding. Your pillow is there to help you position you and your baby appropriately to prevent sore nipples, and to allow the baby to drink enough milk during each feeding. Happy feeding!
