Meeting My Lactation Consultant

How can I prepare for an initial consult with an IBCLC?

Your lactation consultant will be delighted to meet you and your bundle of joy! We’ll share useful tips on how to get the most out of your initial consultation. This will ensure you receive the best lactation care possible and that your IBCLC can help you more efficiently.

Preparing for your consult:

  • If you have not already done so, you will need to fill out your medical chart or any other paperwork from your IBCLC. A lactation consultant wants to give you personalized care specific to your unique needs.
  • Write down any questions you want to have answered.
  • If you are tracking feedings via chart or app, please have that handy.
  • Have whatever equipment and supplies you are currently using ready and within reach in case she needs to use or inspect it. This applies to pumps, bottles, pillows, nipple creams, ointments, shells, shields, etc.
  • Decide the most comfortable spot to have the consultation. The IBCLC will need a hard, flat surface close to an electrical outlet to set up an infant weight scale.

Preparing baby for your consult:

  • Feed your baby 1.5 to 2 hours before the appointment. We need baby hungry, but not starving. A screaming baby is hard to feed!

During your consult:

  • Please put pets away. We love fur babies, but this appointment is all about you and baby.
  • You may have a support person be present during the consult. Remember, it takes a village, so having a support person close will optimize your chances of success.
  • Minimize distractions. Please have music, television and other electronics turned off.

After your consult:

  • Take a moment. Process the visit, then implement the plan beginning with the next feeding.
  • Check your email for the care plan or other resources selected specifically for you and your baby.
  • Your IBCLC should call to check up on you and make sure the plan is resolving any issues and to answer questions you may have.
