Using Ice For Pain Relief

Should I use ice to help with nursing discomfort?

When your breasts hurt and you need to ease the pain, ice is a safe option. Excess swelling can cause pain or pressure and may appear to reduce milk flow and supply. Cold reduces swelling and fullness by decreasing fluid in the tissue around the alveoli (milk-making glands). However, ice-cold cloths and packs should be used sparingly, for 5 – 10 minutes max and can be used at various points during the lactation adventure.
